Daniel Landers, Vice President – Risk Engineer, Mining at Swiss Re

Daniel Landers is a Risk Engineer for a global insurance company, where he supports underwriting of the mining risk portfolio.  He completes assessments for mining operations worldwide, analyzing risks that could generate insurable property losses, provides recommendations to insured clients on risk management, and supports the assessment of mining and energy construction projects. In this role he provides subject matter expertise on tailings facilities, and assists in the development of underwriting guidelines related to the subject.

Prior to working in the insurance industry Mr. Landers held the role of corporate tailings manager for a senior gold mining company. He has held project engineering and execution roles at large engineering and gold mining companies, and his experience has included project permitting, design and construction delivery of mining dams, civil infrastructure and process facilities for projects in the USA, South America, and Africa. He is also involved in digital innovation and data analytics initiatives around risk assessment management, and evaluates ways to improve the evaluation of man-made risks in mining, and specifically in the field of tailings operations and stewardship.
