We are proud to announce the introduction of the N.R. Morgenstern Lecture, which will be presented annually by a recognized expert nominated and selected by the Lectureship Selection Committee, at the Tailings and Mine Waste Conferences hosted in Banff, Denver, and Vancouver.

This lecture has been initiated to celebrate Dr. Morgenstern's continued outstanding leadership in the field of tailings and mine waste management. During his extensive career in Geotechnical Engineering, he has led groundbreaking research in tailings management and provided senior external review for many international and domestic mining companies. He is recognized for his contributions related to Risk Management and the challenges associated with tailings dams around the world.

The inaugural lecture will be presented at the Tailings and Mine Waste Conference 2026 in Denver, Colorado. Each year, the selected lecturer will receive a $1000 CAD honorarium from the University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre.

The N.R. Morgenstern Lecture recognizes his outstanding leadership to the field of tailings and mine waste management. During his extensive career in Geotechnical Engineering, he has led groundbreaking research in tailings management and provided senior external review for many international and domestic mining companies. He is recognized for his contribution related to Risk Management of the challenges associated with tailings dams around the world.

Proposed Lectureship:

The N.R. Morgenstern Lecture will be presented at the annual Tailing and Mine Waste Conferences hosted in Banff, Denver, and Vancouver. It will be presented by a recognized expert nominated and selected by the Lectureship Selection Committee. The University of Alberta Geotechnical Center will provide a honorarium of $1,000 (Cdn) to the presenter.

Lectureship Selection Committee:

The host for both the Selection Committee and Lectureship will be the University of Alberta Geotechnical Center.

It will consist of:

  • Representative or designate of University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre.
  • Representative or designate of Colorado State University
  • Representative or designate of University of British Columbia
  • Two distinguished engineers from industry (recommended and selected by university representatives or designate)

Lectureship Nomination and Selection:

The call for nomination will be advertised with the call for abstracts for the annual conference. Each nomination requires a one-page description of the lecture, a CV of the nominee and two supporting letters outlining the outstanding leadership, contribution and abilities of the nominee. Nominees will be accepted from all disciplines of tailings dam design, operation, and closure.

The committee will review the nomination package and select the presenter of the N.R. Morgenstern Lecture based on the quality of the proposed lecture and supporting letters.
